Let’s break down the tax talk into simple terms:

New Tax Rules in Sri Lanka: What You Need to Know

The government has rolled out some new rules about who needs to sign up for taxes. Here’s the scoop:

Starting Now:

  • Doctors, Accountants, and More: If you’re a professional like a doctor, accountant, engineer, or lawyer, you need to register for taxes.
  • Business and Land Owners: If you’ve started a business or bought property recently, you’re on the list too.
  • Big Savers: Saving a lot in your Provident Fund? If it’s over LKR 20,000 a month, you’ve got to register.
  • High Earners from Services: Making LKR 100,000 a month or LKR 1.2 million a year by providing services? Time to register.

Coming Up Next Year:

  • Adults 18 and Over: If you’re 18 or turning 18 next year, you’ll need to sign up for taxes too.

It’s all in the official notice, Gazette Notification No 2334/21, dated 31 May 2023.

Staying on top of these rules is super important. It keeps you out of trouble and makes sure everything runs smoothly. If you’re not sure what to do, it’s a good idea to talk to a tax expert.
